Survivor Challenge

September 30, 2007

On September 30, 2007, the Roberts/Russell and Hartwick home fellowships had a different type of Tribe Warfare - "Survivor - Arcadia" (styled by Paul and Jen Huss after the Survivor TV show) and we were judged by Dan & Pam Conder and John and Sharon Knapp.

front row: Jill Francisco, Jody Overdorf, Beth Roberts, Jeff Roberts. back row: Paul Huss, Jen Huss, Wendi Russell, Matt Russell, Andy Overdorf. Not pictured, but attended later: Jill & Darrell Zaneski & Gregg Francisco

front row: Jeff Pieper. middle row: Cheri Hartwick, Jessica Shields, Andrea Pieper, Lori Seaman. back row: Chad Hartwick, Don Shields, Doug Seaman. Not pictured, but attended later: Jason & Koren Razo

We all had a fantastic time, and the weather and food couldn't have been any better. No one got injured (and that counts the 15 or more kids offsite with some awesome babysitters).

Team names were plucked straight from the scripture - Shallum (chief over the temple treasury) and Mattithiah (chief over the things baked in pans). Okay, so we stacked the names a bit - but after being in the Old Testament for over 30 days with the 90 Day Bible Reading Challenge, we couldn't resist using Mattithiah. But our plan for mental defeat backfired, when the "biscuit makers" kicked some Shallum rear end until the fire making challenge, where the former body guard Darrell lead us to a tie. Where will our lovely shared trophy show up next?

Challenges included:

  • key/puzzle relay (fill a tube with water to retrieve a key, unlock a box for a puzzle clue, find puzzle, find another puzzle) - winner: Mattithiah
  • tribe name memory match - winner: Mattithiah
  • blind folded obstacle course Bible verse challenge - winner: Shallum
  • sling shot clay disc shooting challenge - winner: Shallum
  • zip line/balance beam relay - winner: Mattithiah
  • fire making / rope burning - winner: Shallum

Results - Mattithiah 100, Shallum 100

There may be a bonus round involving the spectacular trophy!

Shallum team captain Jill Francisco gets to touch the lovely trophy, held by judge John Knapp, at the start of the competition

Judge Sharon Knapp explains the first challenge

And we're off. Pour that water down the tube and watch for the rising key!

Team Mattithiah's Doug Seaman opens their first puzzle clue box. Jeff Roberts finds the correct clue (after finding the other team's!) at the "fork in the tree".

Great teamwork, team Shallum! Too bad you lose this challenge!

Mattithiah wins the first challenge and the gruesome little idol.

The next match game challenge had a few surprises, taken at the '70s themed new years party.

The blindfolded obstacle course required some yelling at your spouses and friends.

Mattithiah tries to put together the pieces from the blindfold challenge and find the memory verse, but Shallum finishes first.

Zip line / balance beam relay - Jeff Pieper and Cheri Hartwick show their form. Shallum loses by four seconds.

Fire making challenge begins slowly for both teams.

Darrell Zaneski is team Shallum's secret weapon in the fire making challenge as well as the slingshot challenge, both wins for Shallum.
