Indiana State Fair Pork Tent Service 2011

This is the ninth year that the Lord (and the Indiana Pork Producers) provides us a fun way to raise some money for the church. We provide 12 volunteers per shift ! We are provided tickets to park and enter the fair and free food and unlimited beverages from the pork producers, as well as a hat and an apron.

We have reduced our service days from 12 to 7.

Serve either a full day (10a-9p with breaks), morning (10a-3p) or evening (3p-9p) shift.

Sign up in the south hallway off the main foyer.

  • Like the last two years, the fair has been extended by five days (this is the third of a three year test to see if the extra days will "stick"), from August 5 - 21. The church will serve only SEVEN days this year instead of 12: August 5/6/7, 12/13, 19/20.
  • Again, new hats and aprons this year, but no new t-shirts. You may wear a Pork Tent T-shirt or hat from previous years if it is in decent shape, or pick out an appropriate shirt of your choice.
  • Cashiers will take credit cards again this year as a requirement of the state fair board.
  • Work staff must arrive to the tent location by 10 am.
  • Gloves are required to be worn at all times when handling food. Hands must be washed after using the restroom.
  • Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Smoking is not allowed inside the tent and must be done in designated smoking areas.
  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older per state fairground requirements.
  • Volunteers receive free meal per shift. Soft drinks and bottled water are unlimited.
  • The use of cell phones is prohibited inside the tent. Please exit the tent to make or receive phone calls. No text messaging is permitted inside the tent.

The Pork Tent is our August "Kindness in Progress" Servant Evangelism Challenge. It is a great way to get to know others from the church, invite your friends and family members to join you, and serve. We earn money for our efforts which goes to debt reduction and 10% to missions.

You do not have to be a member or attender of Cicero Christian Church to join the fun.

Sign up sheets have been posted on the south hallway off the foyer
and you can CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE SIGNUP SHEET
You may sign up in the foyer, email beth[at]reachteachserve.org, or call the office (984.4653) to sign up for a shift...or two...or three.

You Did It! You Helped CCC Raise $10,000!

Volunteers at the Pork Tent

For the sixth year, Cicero Christian Church served the hungry fair-goers by serving at the Pork Tent at the Indiana State Fair from August 6-17. 143 different volunteers helped out serving 255 different shifts.

We could not have done it without your physical and prayer help!!!!!   And the weather was absolutely fantastic for the entire fair. I hope the same for 2009! Special thanks to all of you who prayed daily for help, weather, and safety - your prayers worked!

A representative from the Indiana Pork Producers will be at CCC within the next few weeks to present us with our check. The funds were budgeted to be used to help pay a portion of our mortgage principal payment ($9,000) and as a gift to the missions team to use for local, state-side and international missions ($1,000).

Next year will be different. Five days are being added to the fair. I was mistakenly told that the days would be added to teh beginning, but the 2009 fair dates are August 5-23. I don't know if I will commit our church to the extended days, or what options will be given to us, but keep that as a matter of prayer. I was also told that all vendors are required to accept credit cards.

Photos from 2008

We wore red shirts again, like in 2007.

Look here, Lisa, I like to be in the first spot!

According to the Pork Tent, this is way too much bbq on a sandwich. To us, it looks about right.

This is called the "Dan Conder," a sandwich made of three boneless chops with an outer layer of boneless chops. Also not Pork Tent approved.

Ed & Trudy Pursell

Dave Snead, Jackie and Ray Yoder think something is funny.

Ray, did you hear that they aren't advertising the two chop meal? That will be so much less confusing!

Steve Zell is closing his eyes, that makes it easier to avoid having to clean up so many tables.

One of Jessica St. Peter's friends who is a twin (someone tell me her name!) and Jessica St. Peters

John is savoring a yummy bite.

Larry Chandler, one of the pork tent employees (they also had on red shirts, don't know if we got promoted or they got demoted!) and Michael Brooks.

David and Amy Morris. David hates to have his picture taken.

For the fifth year, Cicero Christian Church served the hungry fair-goers by serving at the Pork Tent at the Indiana State Fair. 177 different volunteers helped out serving 249 different shifts.

Paul & Judy Settles, Doug & Lisa Wiggers & Renee Kinder. Click on the picture to see the larger view to see what Paul does when the camera man says "do something gross!" Renee & Jay Kinder (best #1 & #2 line people in the business!) Judy, Doug and Renee are more than ready to serve...bring on the customers!
Trudy Pursell ponders just what it means to have a dollar off a meal, while Judy Jenkins is thrilled at the prospect. Tom Strauss would rather not have his picture take while his wife Sherry and Susan Hoch beam for the camera. Show us some product, Jay Kinder! mmmmmm...pork burger and boneless loin. Lisa Wiggers is overjoyed (too much so??) to be serving the bone-in chops!
Pork makes you smile. Kristin Schoettmer was the lead in charge of the volunteers in Tent A. Duane had a great attitude for the whole week consider he did most of the heavy lifting working for the Pork Producers Down in Tent A, Jason Schoettmer got drafted to help out the second week on the cash register. Pork Producer staffers Alyse, Lance, guy in yellow shirt that drove the golf cart around, Monica. We had a great group leading us in tent B.
A family portrait: Ed Pursell and daughter Shirley Rennaker Is he asleep? Bored? Tired? Mentally perfecting the "Mike Jenkins Special" pork burger/boneless loin sandwich? Contemplating how to cut seconds off his personal serving record? Once revived from his stupor, he is demonstrating what act requires a glove change. Jan Hoch unloads the bun cart - it is amazing how quickly those thing sell on a Saturday night! Mary Beth Ping is ready for duty!
Bob & Tomme Camp are smiling now, but they just got here! Let's see what they do with the people sneaking in with their contraban corndogs and corn on the cob without buying pork! Infamous "Tent B" in front of the cattle barn.
Jan Hoch, Judy Jenkins, Tom Strauss, Sherry Strauss and Susan Hoch anxiously await the opening of the pork tent to fairgoers. Judy is satisified because she has arranged all the plates, buns and wrappers to perfectly satisfy her needs.
Do you have a
picture or story to share?

it to the webmaster for posting.
A wedding day remembered...at the pork tent? Mike & Judy Jenkins, Mary & Larry McKinley (Judy's brother), and Bev & Bob Manning (maid of honor at the Jenkins wedding more than 40 years ago).

2006

You did it!
You helped CCC Raise $10,000

Volunteers at the Pork Tent

For the fourth year, Cicero Christian Church served the hungry fair-goers by serving at the Pork Tent at the Indiana State Fair. 184 different volunteers helped out!

We could not have done it without your physical and prayer help!!!!!   Special thanks to all of you who prayed daily for help, weather, and safety - your prayers worked!

Debbie from the Indiana Pork Producers will be at CCC within the next few weeks to present us with our check.

Where did the 2006 $10,000 go?

$1,000 dollars will be given the the Food Pantry Team Ministry and will go a long way in keeping the pantry stocked for several months. Do you know we have at least 10 visits to the food pantry every week through the church office? At two bags of groceries each, that is 520 bags of groceries a year! This money is really appreciated, and will go a long way supplementing your monetary and food gifts.

The remainder will go into the general fund.

Bob Hendricks displays why people come to the Pork Tent - The famous "bone in" chops!

This is a crew anxious to serve! From left to right: Ann Morris, Jane Adkins, Phyllis Bradley, Bob Hendricks, Tim Lueking and Walter Morris.

Yes, Bill, thanks for raising your hand - yes you may have a boneless pork sandwich! It's often a family affair: Shirley Carter and Bill Carter work with their daughter Marie Mosbaugh. Notice Larry Seacat keeping ahead with the important job of separating plates (not kidding!)

The people wearing the yellow shirts were at the fair every day, all day. Our own Darrell Zaneski was one of the "yellow shirts" - notice how this crew tries to look busy whenever he is around!

This is a view of the seating area from the serving line. If you'll look at the larger picture, you'll see that Cicero Christian Church is listed on the blackboard, and Kip has been taped to the pole!

Larry Seacat is smiling because he is so full of pork! Larry worked multiple shifts at the fair. Jay Kinder isn't really disgruntled - he's doing his popeye impression.

Jim and Judy Johnson demonstrate the proper way to take your break - taking advantage of the free food.

Darrell Zaneski must really be hungry! After 10 days of all the free pork you can eat, will he ever eat pork again?

If your family invites you to a family reunion at the State Fair, perhaps you should ask for some details! Judy Jenkins shared a morning with her brothers Jim and Larry McKinley, sister-in-law Mary, niece and nephew Andrea and Matt Forrester, and daughter and son-in-law Beth & Jeff Roberts.
